How to Know If Someone Blocked You on Instagram

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Instagram doesn’t show a list of people who blocked you and sends no notification when it happens. But a few signs can tell you with good certainty whether you’ve been blocked.

Signs you’ve been blocked

  • You can’t find their profile in search, or it says “User not found”.
  • Their profile opens and shows a post count, but no posts.
  • In an old chat their name shows as “Instagram User”.
  • You can’t tag or @mention them.

How to confirm it

Log out and open instagram.com/username in a browser, or check from another account. If the profile is visible there but not on your account, you’ve most likely been blocked. If it’s visible nowhere, the account may be deleted or deactivated.

Restricted or muted

They may have restricted or muted you instead of blocking. Then you can still see their profile; your comments just aren’t visible to others or your posts don’t show in their feed. There’s no sure way to detect these.

Apps claiming to “show who blocked you” can’t access Instagram data; most are built to steal your password.
