How to Delete Your Instagram Account Permanently

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Deleting your Instagram account is permanent: your profile, photos, videos, comments and followers are removed for good. Download your data first, and consider deactivating if you’re not sure.

Back up your data before deleting

In “Accounts Center” → “Your information and permissions” → “Export your information” you can download your photos, videos and messages. After deletion you can’t access them anymore.

How to delete your Instagram account

  1. 1Open “Accounts Center” from the ☰ menu.
  2. 2Tap “Personal details” → “Account ownership and control” → “Deactivation or deletion”.
  3. 3Choose the account and select “Delete account”.
  4. 4Pick a reason, enter your password and confirm.

The 30-day window

After you request deletion, your account is hidden for 30 days. If you log in during that time, the deletion is cancelled. After 30 days the account is permanently deleted; fully removing content from Instagram’s systems can take up to 90 days.

The username of a deleted account can be taken by someone else after a while.
