How to Temporarily Deactivate Instagram
Last updated: October 12, 2026
When you deactivate your account, your profile, posts and comments are hidden until you log back in; nothing is deleted. If you just want a break, deactivating is much safer than deleting.
How to deactivate your Instagram account
- 1Go to your profile and open “Accounts Center” from the ☰ menu.
- 2Tap “Personal details” → “Account ownership and control” → “Deactivation or deletion”.
- 3Choose the Instagram account you want to deactivate.
- 4Select “Deactivate account”, continue, enter your password and pick a reason.
- 5Confirm with “Deactivate account”.
How to reactivate it
To reactivate, simply log in with your username and password. Your profile, posts and followers come back as they were.
Instagram only lets you deactivate once a week. If you reactivate right away, you may have to wait before deactivating again.
Deactivating vs deleting
- Deactivation is temporary; everything returns when you log in.
- Deletion is permanent; after the 30-day window the account and content can’t be recovered.
- A deactivated account keeps its username, so nobody else can take it.
